Overview of Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is often confused with Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, and some others as well. Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese Guinea, and it is known as the Republic of Guinea-Bissau officially. It is present in West Africa and shares its borders on the north with Senegal and on the south-east with Guinea. It is a small country covering only about 36125 square kilometers of land area. Other than that, it holds high cultural and rich historical values.

The history of Guinea-Bissau
If we look at the history of Guinea-Bissau, we will see that it had been a part of several kingdoms and empires throughout the period. While the Portuguese empire had its rule over the region since the 16th century, Guinea-Bissau stayed under the kingdom of Kaabu and the Mali Empire for a long time. It was the time of the 18th century. However, in the 19th century, Guinea-Bissau was colonized as Portuguese Guinea. It was declared an independent country in 1973. It was the time when the country's name was very confusing as there were countries with the same name. So, in 1974 the name was changed to Guinea-Bissau, where Bissau was the name of the capital city here. It was only done to remove any of the confusion.

A geographical overview of Guinea-Bissau
In terms of location, Guinea-Bissau is located between latitudes 11 degrees and 13 degrees North and longitudes 11 degrees and 15 degrees West. The area covered by it makes it bigger than Belgium or Taiwan. The western border of Guinea-Bissau is shared with the Atlantic Ocean, which has a huge role in making the country's climate different.

However, the climate of the country is not that great. There is drought from December to April, while there is a rainy season from June to October. The average temperature here is almost 26.3 degrees throughout the year.

Economy of Guinea-Bissau
The GDP of Guinea-Bissau is not that great as it is considered one of the lowest ones in the world. It also impacts the lives of people there as the HDI or Human Development Index here is also among the lowest ones on the earth. The economy here depends on the following things:

• Nuts
• Exports

While these resources are more than enough for a great economy, political instability is why the economy here is that bag.

Demographics of Guinea-Bissau
According to the population revision of 2019, the population in Guinea-Bissau was 1874303. Out of this total population in Guinea-Bissau, more than two-thirds of the population lives below the poverty line.

In terms of language, there is only one official language, and Portuguese is spoken as the second language.

Education
In terms of education, only 67% of the population has access to education here. However, education here is compulsory from 7 to 13, while pre-school education is optional. Apart from schooling, higher education is not that good here, and most people prefer going abroad to get higher education.
