Guatemala, also known as the Republic of Guatemala (officially), is a country situated in Central America. This country is a representative democracy that has Nueva Guatemala de la Asunciรณn as its largest and capital city.
Historical overview of Guatemala
In the 19th century, Guatemala suffered civil strife and chronic instability. However, a series of dictators ruled the country in the early 20th century, backed by the US government and the United Fruit Company. Jorge Ubico was overthrown in 1994 by a military crop that was pro-democratic.
- This incident then initiated a decade-long revolution that led the country to sweep economic and social reforms.
- Again in 1954, the revolution was ended by the US-backed military coup that installed dictatorship.
From 1960 to 1996, leftist rebels and the US-backed military fought a bloody civil war. Then, the United Nations negotiated a peace accord.
Economy of Guatemala
After the peace accord negotiated by the United Nations, Guatemala worked to achieve both successful democratic elections and economic growth.
- Even though the country continues to struggle with multiple problems, including high poverty rate, crime rate, instability, and drug cartels.
- However, the country's continuous efforts paid off, and it was ranked 33rd amongst Caribbean countries in the Human Development Index.
- Guatemala is also known to be the largest Central American economy despite facing different social problems.
Tourism is the major economic driver in the country as the country receives more than 2 million tourists every year. Even more, the number of cruise ships visiting Guatemala is also increasing over time.
