The postal codes were first introduced in New Zealand in 1977, but those were not that efficient as the main focus was bulk sorting only. So, considering the complex situation, an updated postal code system was introduced in New Zealand in 2006. This updated version reduced a lot of workload and technology requirements.

The postal codes in New Zealand consist of 4 digits. These are used for the identification of the address in the following manner:

• The first 2 digits help in the identification of the area.
• The third digit tells about the type of delivery: a street, a rural address, PO Box, or even a Private Bag.
• The last digit tells about the specific lobby, RD number, or the Suburb. In this way, the postal code is divided into 3 parts, making the delivery process easy and quick.
